Jerry Montgomery

Jerry Montgomery

I am drawn to thoughts of the time spent in the busyness of life, as we
keep appointments, push to make things happen, meet deadlines and
grind out the day to day that is the bedrock of our existence.  Now, I’m
not ashamed that I get to earn a living, but at this time, I am amazed at
the focus I spend in doing it.  Jerry was not so preoccupied with push and
deadlines.  His interests and focus seemed to be elsewhere, not that I
know where, other than elsewhere.  He was always someone who had some time.  He always was cheerful and willing to share a moment for a conversation.  And when you inquired, he always responded with a combination of thoughtfulness and always humor.  He didn’t take himself any more seriously than he did anyone else.  He really wasn’t too impressed with people, especially “important” people.  He would listen and consider, but always formed his own opinions.  He didn’t press his opinion on others, but never let others press their opinion into his.  Maybe Jerry was our free thinker. Jerry Montgomery always kept the important aspects of life in mind; he
was a good son, husband, and father. Jerry was also a good friend. He
taught me a great deal about life, some of which I was too slow to
understand for a long time. The last gift Jerry gave me was a desire to
attend this reunion. When I was in Greenwood for his funeral it made me
realize that one can leave the Delta but it never leaves them.
